BxO concludes our 52nd mainstage season with our first-ever production of Gilbert & Sullivan's THE MIKADO. Premiered in 1885, THE MIKADO was originally written using Japanese imagery to allow Gilbert to satirize contemporary British society through an exotic filter. Bronx Opera's production will strip away the 'yellowface' element to focus on the comic relationships and timeless political satire of Gilbert's text and Sullivan's music. Instead of using exotic locales and images to soften the blow, BxO will use the current day to focus and sharpen Gilbert's commentary into 2019.
